Bl. Monica Naisen - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online Bl. Monica Naisen, Roman Catholic laywoman and Japanese Martyr. she was arrested for sheltering Blessed John Baptist Zola and was beheaded at Nagasaki with her husband, Blessed John Naisen. Feastday: July 12

Bl. Peter Rinshei - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online Bl. Peter Rinshei, Roman Catholic Martyr of Japan. A native Japanese, he entered the Jesuit college at Arima, Japan, and assisted Blessed Francis Pacheco as his catechist. Arrested by the Japanese authorities, he was imprisoned with Blessed Francis, who admitted him to the Jesuits just before Peter was burned alive at Nagasaki. Feastday June 20

Bl. Paul Shinsuki - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online Bl. Paul Shinsuki, Roman Catholic Martyr of Japan. He became a Christian and entered the Jesuits. Among his notable students was Blessed Paul Navarro. Arrested by the Japanese officials, he was burned alive at Nagasaki. Feastday June 20

Bl. Balthasar de Torres - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online Bl. Balthasar de Torres,  Roman Catholic Martyr of Japan. A Jesuit, he was born in Grenada, Spain, and entered the Society in 1579. He worked in India, at Goa, and Macao and went to Japan in 1606. When the persecution of Christians began, Balthasar was arrested and condemned. He was burned alive in Nagasaki. Feastday June 20

Bl. John Baptist Zola - Saints Bl. John Baptist Zola, Roman catholic Martyr of Japan. He became a Jesuit and was sent to India in 1602. Four years later he entered Japan, only to be banished in 1614. Upon returning to Japan, he was arrested and burned alive at Nagasaki. Feastday June 20

St. Vincent Kaun - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online St. Vincent Kaun, Roman Catholic Martyr of Japan, he was burned alive at Nagasaki with Blessed Francis Pacheco. Feastday June 20

St. Francis Pacheco - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online St. Francis Pacheco, Roman Catholic Jesuit Priest and Japanese Martyr. A native of Ponte da Lima, Portugual, Pacheco entered the Society of Jesus in 1584 and was subsequently sent to Macao. There he was ordained and concentrated his efforts on missionary work on the island. He then went to Japan, the main focus of his labors. After a brief first visit, he left the islands but returned with Bishop Louis Cerquiera as vicar general to the recently constituted diocese, of which Cerquiera was head. The bishop died in 1614 and Pacheco was forced to leave Japan following the formal expulsion of all foreign clergy. Under the risk of penalty, Pacheco returned to Japan in a disguise and served for a short time before receiving appointment as episcopal administrator. He held the post briefly, as he was soon arrested and burned alive with eight other Christians at Nagasaki. Feastday: June 20

Bl. Alphonsus de Mena - Saints & Angels - Catholic Online Bl. Alphonsus de Mena, Roman Catholic Dominican martyr of Japan. He was born in Logrono in Spain and entered the Dominican Order at Salamanca. A nephew of Blessed Peter Navarrete, Alphonsus accompanied him to Japan where he worked in the Dominican missions. On September 10, 1622 Alphonsus was burned alive by the Japanese in a group of martyrs, led by Blessed Charles Spinola at Nagasaki. Feastday June 1

St. Francis Nagasaki Feastday: February 6 Francis is a Japanese from Miako. He became a physician and later was converted to Catholicism by the Franciscan missionaries in Japan. He became a Franciscan tertiary, served as a catechist, and was one of the twenty-six Catholics crucified for their Faith near Nagasaki on February 5 during the persecution of Christians by the Taiko, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. They were all canonized as the martyrs of Japan in 1862. He is also known as Francis of Miako. His feast day is February 6th. St. Paul Miki Feastday: February 6 Paul was the son of a Japanese military leader. He was born at Tounucumada, Japan, was educated at the Jesuit college of Anziquiama, joined the Jesuits in 1580, and became known for his eloquent preaching. He was crucified on Februay 5 with twenty-five other Catholics during the persecution of Christians under the Taiko, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ruler of Japan in the name of the emperor. St. Leo Karasuma Feastday: February 5 1597 Martyr of Japan and a Korean Franciscan tertiary. He was martyred in Nagasaki, Japan, receiving canonization in 1862. St. Louis Ibachi Feastday: February 5 1597 Martyr of Japan. A twelve year-old who served the Franciscan mission, Louis was crucified at Nagasaki, Japan, with twenty-five companions. He was canonized in 1867. St. Philip of Jesus Feastday: February 5 1597 Franciscan martyr in Japan. A Spaniard born in Mexico City, he entered the Franciscans at Puebla but then departed the order in 1589 to journey to the Philippines as a trader. In 1590, he repented and returned to the Franciscan fold. His superiors commanded him to sail back to Mexico to be ordained a priest and, while on the way, his ship was caught in a storm and driven into the waters of Japan. Landing in 1596, he was soon arrested and, with St. Peter Baptist, was put to death by crucifixion at Nagasaki. He was canonized in 1862.

Bl. Michael Nakashima Feastday: December 25 1628 Jesuit martyr of Japan. A native Japanese, Michael was admitted to the Society of Jesus because of his holiness and courage. He hid priests and was placed under arrest for many months for harboring missionaries. Michael was then taken to Shimabara and was scalded to death in the hot springs at Mount Ungen. Pope Pius LX beatified him in 1867.

St. Francis Galvez Feastday: December 4 1623 Martyr of Japan. He was born in New Castile, Spain, and became a Franciscan in 1591. Assigned to Manila, Philippines, he worked there for twelve years and entered Japan in 1612. When the persecutions started, Francis went to Macau, where he had his skin dyed to make him appear Japanese. He entered Japan again in 1618 but was arrested. Francis was burned alive in Edo. He was beatified in 1867

Bl. Francis Chakichi Feastday: October 2 1622 Four-year-old martyr of Japan. He was beheaded in Nagasaki, Japan, with his mother, Blessed Lucy, and his brother Blessed Andrew. His father, Blessed Louis, was burned at the stake. He was beatified in 1867 Bl. Louis Shakichi Feastday: October 2 1622 Martyr of Japan, a layman who released Blessed Louis Flores from prison. Louis was burned alive in Nagasaki, and his wife and children were beheaded. He was beatified in 1867. Bl. Lucy Chakichi Feastday: October 2 1622 Martyr of Japan, the wife of Blessed Louis Chakichi. She was beheaded with her sons, Andrew and Francis, at Nagasaki, Japan. She was beatified in 1867.

He was from Musashi, in Kwanto province, Japan, and a convert, working as a catechist with Blessed Apollinaris Franco. Francis was burned alive at Omura and was beatified in 1867 Bl. Mancius of St. Thomas Feastday: September 12 Martyr of Japan. He was a native Japanese catechist, who was burned alive at Omura, Japan, with Blessed Thomas Zumarraga and companions. St. Peter Paul of St. Claire Feastday: September 12 1622 Japanese martyr. Born in Japan, he worked as an assistant to Blessed Apollinaris Franco and as a catechist prior to his arrest by Japanese authorities. Condemned to death, he was burned alive at Omura Bl. Peter Ikiemon Feastday: September 11 1622 Japanese martyr. Peter was seven when, with his father, Blessed Bartholomew, he was beheaded at Nagasaki. Bl. Paul Navarro Feastday: November 1 1622 Martyr of Japan. A native of Laino, Cassano, Italy, Paul received an excellent education before becoming a Jesuit in 1587. He was sent to India where he was ordained, and subsequently went to Japan where he helped to build the rapidly growing Catholic community there, holding the post of superior. Arrested by Japanese authorities, he was burned alive at Shimabara along with two other Jesuits and an assistant. Blessed Paul Shinsuki was his catechist. Bl. Peter Onizuko Feastday: November 1 1622 Japanese martyr. A native of Arima, Japan, Peter was converted to Christianity and became a Jesuit postulant. With Blessed Paul Navarro, whom he assisted in his work, he was seized by Japanese authorities and burned alive at Shimabara. Bl. John Shoun Feastday: November 18 1619 Martyr of Japan. A priest and member of the London Charterhouse, he was arrested with fellow monks for opposing the claim by King Henry VIII of spiritual supremacy over the English Church. Irnprisoned at Newgate,Thomas was starved to death Bl. William Way Feastday: September 23 1588 Martyr of England. Born in Exeter, England, he went to Reims, France, where he was ordained in 1586. Using the name Flower, William started his labors, but was arrested within six months. He was executed at Kingston-on-Thames by being hanged, drawn, and quartered.
